Choosing the Right Headpiece for your Wedding Day
By Robin Hall
The bridal headpiece has certainly evolved over the years, from bulky
tulle and flowers to soft wire bands adorned with crystals. We also have
so many more choices now and with that, the difficulty of choosing the
"right" one becomes daunting. Essentially if you love it, then it's the
perfect one for you, because now almost anything, however, knows a little
about the different styles available will help you to complement your
dress and theme.

Crowns
Crowns are full pieces placed on top of the head. They can be made of
almost any material from wire to flowers. Crowns are usually full circles
with heights of more than 2 inches. They are classic and complement a
variety of styles, from medieval weddings to whimsical romantic themes.
Veils can be worn to the back or incorporated into the center of the crown
in any length. There is no "best" style for wearing your hair with a
crown. If your theme is medieval, then you would want hair kept long and
lightly curled or crimped. If you are having a soft princess theme,
placing the crown within a high pile of curls would complete the look.

Tiaras
Tiaras are known as the ultimate of headpieces and are a dream accessory
for every little girl. How nice that when we grow up, we can actually own
one! Tiara styles can be as simple or as ornate as you choose. Tiaras are
created using semi-circular tiara bands or bases and can be worn on top of
the head or as a headband. Custom made tiaras are ideal for complementing
a particular theme. A romantic tiara features soft crystal pearls and
sparkling Swarovski crystals. A beach theme tiara features funky lamp-work
and Murano beads in a soft aqua and topaz or a black/white theme wedding
with a tiara featuring jet black and clear crystals further adorned with
black and white feathers. A tiara design really knows no bounds and is
limited only to your imagination. The best part about custom made tiaras
is that they showcase your own unique style and personality and you don't
end up with a look that everyone else has. Veils can be worn with tiaras
in any style or length. Veils worn at the back tend to complement the
tiara nicely. Hairstyles usually fit with the type of tiara worn. For
instance, a very high ornate tiara would suggest an up-do, while a simple
tiara worn as a headband would go best with long flowing hair.
Crescents
Flowers, crystals, sequins and beads are used to create the crescent
piece, usually on a base of tapestry fabric or satin. The crescent has
largely been ignored for the past decade or so, but if done right, it can
be an elegant and very unique piece. Veils can be worn traditionally and
are incorporated into the design of the crescent, either removable or
stationary. Back veils do not look as good with the crescent as with
tiaras
Back Pieces
Back pieces are perfect when you want to accent and complement your look
but want a very simple piece. The back-piece allows you to focus on your
hairstyle while adding sparkle and complementing your dress. Typically
worn without veils, but you can have one designed to allow one for the
ceremony. The back piece is only worn with an up-do.
Combs
A comb is a perfect piece for brides, bridesmaids and mothers of the bride
and groom as well as flower girls and for prom. Combs can be created to
complement the bridal tiara or crown and to emphasize the theme of the
event. Combs come in many sizes from a small 2" comb to a large 8" that is
sometimes worn as a substitute for a tiara. A comb can be custom made to
incorporate charms, beads, crystals and more. Combs are incredibly
versatile and are a close second favourite to the tiara. Combs can be worn
anywhere and are wonderful with just about any hairstyle.
V-Bands
A renaissance look that can be as ornate or as simple as you choose. This
look complements medieval theme events and is making a nice comeback. The
V piece is shaped so that the tip of the "V" sits right on the forehead
with a gem drop. Only back veiling would complement this headpiece and
typically no veil is worn. The V tends to look best with a half up-do or
with straight hair and no bangs.
Wreaths
This headpiece is very soft and romantic. Wreaths can be made using soft
floral adornments and accented with beading, crystals or feathers. The
wreath has changed over the years and is no longer the bulky piece it once
was, thankfully. The wreath differs from the crown in that the wreath is
softer and more delicate while the crown is fairly formal and ornate.
Mostly used for outdoor, romantic or country theme events. Veiling can be
worn and is usually incorporated as a removable piece within the center of
the wreath. Hairstyles that would suit a wreath include long flowing hair
or an up-do with the wreath placed around the piled hair.
Hairpins
Hairpins are the perfect accessory for any event and look amazing on
up-dos. They can be simple, ornate, romantic or wild and are the most
versatile pieces. Perfect for the wedding party to complement the theme or
as attendant gifts, excellent for proms, special dinners. any occasion
really where you want some shine and sparkle. Have your hairpins custom
made to suit your personality or theme and to add a touch of the unique to
the event. Wear a couple of sparkling crystal hairpins to the grocery
store with jeans and a tee. They really fit into any occasion.
Goddess Wrap
The Goddess wrap is a length of sterling silver or 18k plated wire loosely
crocheted with beads, pearls and crystals. The resulting effect is
stunning and completely unique. This piece is used to wind around and
into a hairstyle rather than be placed on top of your head. This look is
very new and gorgeous. Any veil can be worn with Goddess wraps. Perfect
for weddings, proms or any event. Very versatile. The Goddess Wrap is
exclusive to Crystal Goddess, a shop dedicated to custom made tiaras,
combs and gorgeous crystal bouquets.
